Value: 380 Crore | By the time the northeast monsoon sets in later this year, the Water Resources Department (WRD) is likely to have completed work on a fifth reservoir at Thervoy Kandigai-Kannankottai in Tiruvallur district, to store water for supply to the city
The project, aimed at linking waterbodies in Thervoy Kandigai and Kannankottai to form a reservoir, can store 1,000 million cubic feet of water, when filled twice. It had faced several hurdles and disputes related to land acquisition
Since December last, work is on in full swing to form an earthen bund over a distance of two km at Kannankottai. The construction of the bund at this stretch is crucial as it is the reservoir’s deepest portion that will help store more water, said a WRD official.
Earthen bund
We are building an earthen bund below the ground level up to six metres to prevent seepage. The height of the bund will vary between nine and 13 metres above the ground level too in this stretch,” said an official
The department has raised the bund up to a height of five metres so far. It is also in the process of building a weir, a structure that will allow surplus water to automatically flow out without damaging the bund, and three sluice gates to provide water for irrigation of about 670 acres in both villages
Once these main works are finished, water can be stored for supply to the city this year, the official said. It may be recalled that the ambitious project was launched by the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in September 2013
Of the revised project cost of ?380 crore, nearly ?160 crore was spent towards compensation provided to landowners. The process is now on to provide interest amount to the 840 landowners of six villages, including Tamaraikuppam, Senjiagaram and Karadiputhur
We are also forming a diversion road to link Palavakkam and Madharpakkam, which will be opened for traffic by this month-end. This will replace the road running into the bund for two km,” said an official
Besides works to link water released to existing surplus course that finally joins Pazhaverkadu, WRD is also planning to complete works to construct an intake tower by this month-end for drawal of water. It will be transported through a 66-km-long pipeline to Poondi reservoir, from where it will be used for drinking water supply
